I’ll be honest with you and say that Jira is not a looker, nor is it the most intuitive platform for teams with little experience with software development. There is a lot of complex terminology used throughout Jira. However, teams familiar with development and IT will find Jira easy to navigate, configure and use.
Creating user stories with points and adding them to a sprint or backlog is straightforward and tracking progress is easy with Jira’s suite of task management tools. If you’re considering using Jira for Kanban-based projects, you can certainly do that, but I suggest you look at its sibling, Trello, as it offers a much better Kanban experience.

You’ll find task management tools, which include lists, Gantt charts that support dependencies and Kanban boards (limited to three boards with 10 cards) that support custom fields. It’s a shame that the free plan only supports five users and external guests with limited permissions. If it supported unlimited users, it would rival ClickUp for the top spot on my list.
Teamwork’s automation builder, which features a pleasant graphical interface, is a joy to use.
The free plan also supports integrations and offers 100 monthly automations. Teamwork’s automation builder, which comes with pre-made automations, is a delight to use and can quickly create recurring tasks and simple automated workflows.
While Teamwork.com’s free plan is excellent, be sure you can afford its paid plans should you need to scale. Plans start at $13.99 per user per month and cost as much as $69.99 per user per month (when billed monthly).

Coda supports automations and integrations, and the free plan lets you upload 1GB of attachments and try its powerful AI tool.

During my time with Smartsheet, I found navigation straightforward and its sheets incredibly powerful. However, its Kanban board and Gantt chart were less intuitive than those found in competing platforms, such as ClickUp and Zoho Projects, due to poor design. Still, it didn’t take long for me to create projects, assign users and due dates, and manage large datasets.
The automation builder, while functional, has a learning curve, but setting up integrations was simple. If you put some time into learning Smartsheet, I think it will serve you well.

I have been recommending monday.com’s free plan to startups and new teams for years due to the platform’s gorgeous interface, which makes monday.com a joy to use. The free plan includes over 200 project templates that help get projects started quickly, collaborative documents, a customizable dashboard, access to mobile applications and Kanban boards that make task tracking a piece of cake. The free plan also offers unlimited messaging and two-factor authentication.
If monday.com offered as many task management tools (such as Gantt charts and lists) as ClickUp and Teamwork, it would be much higher on my list. Still, if all you need to do is track simple Kanban-based projects, monday.com will suit you well.
The Kanban boards on monday.com are some of the best outside of Trello.
The downside to monday.com’s free plan is that it only supports two users. However, the paid plans are affordable, ranging from $12 to $24 per user per month. There’s also a customizable enterprise plan that varies in price depending on team size and features. The plans do have a three-user minimum requirement. Keep this in mind when planning finances.

In addition, the free plan supports 10 users, unlimited projects, comments, assignees, due dates, messages, tasks and storage and allows users to manage tasks on boards, lists and calendars.
You can integrate Asana with over 100 platforms.
The free plan also provides access to Asana’s mobile applications. However, if you use Android devices, you might want to temper your expectations, as I experienced a lot of lag during testing.
You’ll also find recurring tasks and basic reports. Users can also set two-factor authentication policies and rest easy, knowing that Asana uses 256-bit encryption at rest and in transit and provides cross-region data backups.
You can enter one of Asana’s paid plans if you outgrow the free plan. When billed monthly, prices range from $13.49 to $30.49 per user, making Asana a little more costly than competing solutions.

I found it easy to add descriptions and assignees, due dates and files to task cards, and the commenting system, while basic, works flawlessly. Configuring integrations is straightforward, but Trello’s automation builder has a learning curve. Overall, SMBs will be able to hit the ground running with Trello.
